to celebrate turning 40, i'm posting a sketch and short writeup of a moment or a person who has touched my life in a positive way. i will post each day until i turn 40 in march.
#2 is louise deaton, my AP calculus teacher in high school. her clickety clackety acrylic nails and her clangy bangle bracelets weren't the only things that grabbed my attention. she made calculus seem FUN. she didn't accept any excuses. she was stern and intimidating and seemed too big of a personality to be in my very small town.
mrs. deaton made me want to be better. not only in math, but in everything. i wanted her to see how hard i was trying and i wanted her to think i was funny and smart. she expected the best from all of her students and we all rose to the occasion. almost all of us passed the AP exam.
i think she knew i was having a tough time at home and she took good care of me in and out of the classroom. one day we skipped school together along with her foreign exchange student. it was around christmas time and we got a photo taken on santa's lap. santa got excited to have a teacher on his lap and he squeezed her bum. i'll never forget the way she laughed and kept retelling the story with her susan sarandon voice.
i think, most of all, what i appreciated about mrs. deaton was that she saw what was inside of me and had faith that i was gonna be okay. and in some way, knowing she felt that way, made me believe it too.
see my other #40touches posts here.
i will be publishing my 40touches posts in no particular order. i acknowledge that negative moments have also had an impact on my life, but seeing as how this is a celebration project, i won't be posting those.
also, i am choosing to only mention 40 because i'm turning 40, and therefore i can't possibly mention all the people, places or moments that have touched me in a positive way. this is just a sampling that i thought would be fun to talk about and include.
i hope this encourages you to reach out to those who have touched your life in some way.
